Guoyu - Definition and Overview

Guoyu (國語, Wade-Giles: Kuo-yü) can refer to:

• a classical history book of ancient China. See Guoyu (book).
• the language spoken by the Emperor of China and/or his court. For most of Chinese history this would refer to various historical forms of Chinese language, though during some non-Han Chinese dynasties the word may refer to another language, e.g.: Xianbei language during the Northern Wei Dynasty, Mongolian during the Yuan Dynasty and Manchu during the Qing Dynasty.
• the modern official form of Chinese. See Standard Mandarin.
