Gurgaon - Definition and Overview

Gurgaon, situated in the National Capital Region of Delhi, is a bustling metropolis that is being touted as the next Singapore of India. The origins of the name of this city is steeped in Hindu mythology. Legend has it that Gurgaon is the ancestral village of Guru Dronacharya, the teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas in the Indian epic Mahabharata. Gurgaon comes from Guru (from Guru Dronacharya) and Gaon (meaning village).

Today, skyscrapers and new age shopping malls dot the city. It is also India’s original outsourcing destination, housing major multinationals such as GE, Vertex, American Express, Keane and Convergys. Other reputable companies such as Coke, Pepsi, GSK, HP, Gilette, General Motors, Nestle have made Gurgaon their corporate headquarters.

It is also the new home of thousands of professionals, who have bought swanky apartments in newly constructed colonies and condominiums.
