HMS Erebus - Definition and Overview

Over the history of the British Royal Navy, two ships have bore the name HMS Erebus. Both were named after the dark region of Hades in Greek Mythology called Erebus.

• The first Erebus was commissioned in 1826. The vessel was last seen along with HMS Terror in Baffin Bay in August 1845.

• The second Erebus was the first monitor of the Erebus-class built in 1916. The ship participated in both World War I and World War II.
