Halifax Regional Council - Definition and Overview

Halifax City Council is the governing body for the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Prior to the formation of the cities elected government in 1841 the running of the city was left in the hands of a selected group of men. The first Mayor of Halifax was Stephen Binney, who was elected to council and chosen by the members of the council to fill the position of Mayor.

In 1996 the City of Halifax ceased to be when it was amalgamated with the city of Dartmouth, town of Bedford and Halifax County forming the Halifax Regional Municipality. The Halifax Regional Council consists of twenty-three councillors and one Mayor. Elections are held every four years, 1996, 2000 and 2004. By-elections have been held in 1998, 1999 and 2003 due to Councillors being elected to the Provincial legislature.
