Hamilton is a village located in the Town of Hamilton in Madison County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 3,509. The village is named after Alexander Hamilton, American patriot.

The Village of Hamilton is in the northwest part of the town on Route 12B. Colgate University is located in Hamilton.

Geography

Hamilton is located at 42°49'32" North, 75°32'40" West (42.825646, -75.544673)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 6.5 km² (2.5 mi²). 6.1 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.37% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,509 people, 707 households, and 320 families residing in the village. The population density is 576.5/km² (1,492.2/mi²). There are 785 housing units at an average density of 129.0/km² (333.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 90.85% White, 2.91% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 3.70% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.46% from other races, and 1.94% from two or more races. 2.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 707 households out of which 21.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.6% are married couples living together, 6.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 54.6% are non-families. 41.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.13 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the village the population is spread out with 8.6% under the age of 18, 62.6% from 18 to 24, 10.0% from 25 to 44, 9.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 21 years. For every 100 females there are 83.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.7 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $36,583, and the median income for a family is $68,864. Males have a median income of $41,000 versus $33,750 for females. The per capita income for the village is $13,203. 18.5% of the population and 3.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.2% of those under the age of 18 and 7.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
