The Reverend Hannibal Goodwin (1822-1900), a Episcopal minister at the House of Prayer in Newark, New Jersey patented a method for making transparent, flexible film out of nitrocellulose.
He died of a injuries related to a street accident in Newark the same year his company was incorporated and was unable to profit from his invention. The patent was bought by a company that sucessfully sued Eastman Kodak for copyright infringement.
