Hanshin Electric Railway Co., Ltd. (阪神電気鉄道株式会社, Hanshin denki-tetsudō Kabushiki Gaisha) is a Japanese private railway company that links Osaka and Kobe. It owns the Hanshin Tigers baseball team.

The name hanshin is derived from the names for Kobe(神戸) and Osaka(大阪). The result of combining the second character from Osaka and the first character from Kobe is 阪神 which in Japanese can be read Hanshin.

Timeline

June 12, 1899 "Settsu Electric Railway Co., Ltd." (摂津電気鉄道株式会社) is established.

July 7, 1899 The company is renamed "Hanshin Electric Railway Co., Ltd.".

February 15 1998 The joint operation with Sanyo Electric Railway is expanded. Both companies' limited expresses begin to run between Umeda and Himeji.
