Haugesund is a town and municipality in the county of Rogaland, Norway. It was founded in 1854, but was a centre of power at least as early as the Viking Age. Some historians argue that the first king of Norway, Harald Finehair, came from Avaldsnes just outside Haugesund. The town is situated at a strategically important sound through which ships could pass without heavy sea.
