Hawaiian Airlines is the 12th largest commercial airline in the United States and uses the IATA designation HA. It is the largest airline based in the State of Hawai'i, and services all the major Hawaiian Islands, American Samoa, Tahiti, Sydney, Australia, and most major cities on the U.S. West Coast, including specifically Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon; Las Vegas, Nevada; Phoenix, Arizona; and Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego in California. Several of the West Coast destinations are linked through Kahului, Maui.
Hawaiian is commonly referred to by the acronym "HAL".
Hawaiian Airlines' hub is located at Honolulu International Airport in Honolulu, Hawai'i; it is one of two airlines that have their hubs there (the other is competitor Aloha Airlines). HAL has code sharing agreements with Alaska Airlines, America West Airlines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Northwest Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic Airways.
Hawaiian Airlines filed for bankruptcy in March 2003, and is overdue for $4.5 million USD worth of payments to the pilots' pension plan. Within the company, it has been suggested that the plan be terminated.
