Headlinese is nonconversational language used in newspaper headlines.
Because of tight space requirements, copy editors usually must write headlines in a compressed, telegraphic style.
This includes the use of contractions, such as Pols (for "politicians"); Dems (for "Democrats"), GOP (from "Grand Old Party", a nickname for the Republican Party). Grammatical articles and forms of "to be" are often omitted.
