Health Science Center Syracuse - Definition and Overview

The Health Science Center Syracuse, better known as the State University of New York Upstate Medical University, is a college of health-related professions on University Hill in Syracuse, New York, USA. It includes the College of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Health Professions, and College of Graduate Studies. This school began in 1834 as the Medical Institution of Geneva College (now known as Hobart and William Smith Colleges). When Hobart dissolved its medical school due to low enrollment, the land and buildings were sold to Dean John Towler, who later donated the school to Syracuse University on the condition that they establish and maintain a medical college consistent with AMA standards. Syracuse University later sold the school to the State University of New York in 1950. The campus includes one of the four medical colleges in the State University of New York system.

Upstate is the sixteenth oldest North American medical school and the second oldest in New York State, after Columbia University.
