Hellespont - Definition and Overview |

Hellespont (i.e. "Sea of Helle" variously named in classical literature, Hellesponium Pelagus, and Fretum Hellesponticum), was the ancient name of the Dardanelles. It was so-called from Helle, the daughter of Athamas, who was drowned here.
