Helmut Rahn - Definition and Overview

Helmut Rahn, know as Der Boss (The Boss), (* 16th August 1929 in Essen; † 14th August 2003) was a German football player. He became a Legend for having scored the winning goal in the final game of the Football World Cup 1954 (West Germany 3 - Hungary 2).

Career

Helmut Rahn stared his career at Altenessen 1912 where he played from 1938 until 1946 he then switched to SC Oelde 1919, for whom he scared 52 Goals. In season 1950/51 he played for the Sportfreunde Katernberg

His greatest success he had with Rot-Weiss Essen from 1951 - 1959, they won the DFB-Pokal in 1953 and were German Champions in 1955. For one year, from 1959 till 1960 he played at 1. FC Köln, 1960 he switched to Twente Enschede in Netherlands.

At the Start of the Bundesliga 1963 he played at the MSV Duisburg where he ended his carrer in 1965 due to a knee injury.

He became a Legend and a German football Hero in the final game of the Football World Cup 1954. The German Team was playing against Hungary. Germany was 0-2 behind at first, but Rahn managed to score the 2-2 and also the final 3-2. This game is known in Germany as "The Miracle of Bern" (Das Wunder von Bern).

Rahn played in 40 international games in which he scored a total of 21 goals.

Helmut Rahn - Memorial

At the 11th July 2004, 50 years after the game in Bern, a life size Monument was presented at the Georg-Melches-Stadium in Essen. The Monument will stand in front of the Statiun, on the Helmut Rahn - Place
