Henbane - Definition and Overview

Henbane, Hyoscyamos Niger (Solanaceae) originated in Eurasia where it was used in combination with other plants, such as mandrake, as an anaesthetic potion.

Traditionally used in German pilsner beers as a flavouring, until the introduction of the Bavarian Purity Law in 1614 outlawed the use of Henbane and allowed only the sole use of hops.
