Henry Gilman - Definition

Henry Gilman was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on May 19, 1893. He was professor in Chemistry at Iowa State University from 1919 to 1962, and the current chemistry building at Iowa State is named after him. He was also the first chemist at a land-grant institute to be named a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

He is known as the father of organometallic chemistry, where he did his most notable work. He discovered the Gilman reagents that bear his name.

In 1938, he published a 2-volume textbook titled "Organic chemistry, an advanced treatise", the first major organic chemistry textbook. Subsequent additions were published in 1943 and 1953. He died November 7, 1986.
