Henryk Jablonski - Definition and Overview

Henryk Jabłoński (27 December 1909 - 27 January2003) was a Polish politician, socialist, historian and professor at Warsaw University. He was a former chief of the People's Republic of Poland (president) from 1972 to 1985.

Jabonski was born in Waliszewo near Lowicz. From 1931, he was a member of the Polish Socialistic Party (PPS). During World War II he fought at the battle of Narvik (Norway) and he joined the French resistance. In 1945 he become a member of the National Country Council (KRN), during the years 1946 to 1948 he had high functions in the PPS (chairman of Central State Committee and its vice-leader). He approved joining the PPS with the Polish Worker Party (PPR). From 1947 to 1972, he was deputed to Sejm. In 1948 he was appointed professor at Warsaw University (from 1952 member of Polish Academy of Sciences-PAN). In the years 1948 to 1981, he was in the Central Committee of the Polish United Worker Party(KC PZPR).

In 1972, based on the initiative of Edward Gierek, Jablonski was chosen leader (president) of the People's Republic of Poland. From 1976 to 1983 he was a chief of the Front of the National Unity(FJN). From 1983 to 1990 he was chief of the Freedom and Democracy Fighters Union (ZBOWiD). In 1985 he was substituted at the chair of the country leader by General Wojciech Jaruzelski.
