Hesse-Marburg Hesse-Marburg

Hesse-Marburg - Definition and Overview

Hesse-Marburg was a German Landgraviate, i.e. a principality directly under the Emperor, that existed independently between 1485 - 1500 and 1567 - 1605. It comprised of the city of Marburg and the surrounding territories; approximately what is today called Oberhessen ("Upper Hesse"). In 1605, upon the death of its last ruler, it was inherited by his nephew and annexed to his landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel, but in 1650, the southern part of the old Hesse-Marburg territory went to Hesse-Darmstadt. All areas of Hesse-Marburg are today located within the Federal German state of Hesse.
