Highway 406 as part of the 400-series network

Highway 406 is a 400-Series Highway in Ontario, Canada. It serves as the primary north-south route though the central portion of the Niagara Peninsula, connectinging Welland, Thorold and downtown St. Catharines to the Queen Elizabeth Way. Construction began in 1963, with the first section open in 1965. Extensions were opened in 1970, 1971, 1984 and 1991. It is currently 25 km long.

An extension to the the proposed Mid-Peninsula Highway south of East Main Street is currently under review. This section will initially be built as a 2-lane highway, and later upgraded to a full freeway as traffic counts warrant. Once that is planned out, the kilometre posts will change as the extension is southward.

Exits are not currently numbered on Highway 406.
