Horror punk - Definition

Horror punk is a dark style of music mixing Gothic and punk rock sounds with morbid imagery. Often, song topics are taken from horror movies, but the best horror punk creates atmosphere by telling tales through the song. It is closely related to an often overlaps with the Death Rock movement; which tends to lean more towards the goth or rockabilly sound - ussuaally excluding hardcore punk and metal bands.

The Misfits are considered to be the first horror punk band. They were followed by bands like Samhain (now known as the Doom Metal band Danzig, headed by the former frontman of The Misfits), 45 Grave, and Mourning Noise.

Horror punk continues as a thriving sub-genre with dedicated websites, festivals, and current bands such as Mister Monster, Eerie Ln., The Undead, Dead End Drive In, Blitzkid, The Cryptkeeper Five, Nim Vind and Mockingbird Lane.
