Hot swapping is the ability to add or remove parts of a computer system without turning off the system. It requires more sophisticated software and hardware than plug-and-play.
Protocols that support hot swapping include USB, Firewire, and SATA. Protocols that don't support hot swapping include IDE.
What about PCMCIA? Are they all (wireless cards, for example) hot swappable?
