Howard County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 14,300. The county seat is Nashville. Howard County was formed on April 17, 1873 and named for James Howard, a state senator.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,542 km² (595 mi²). 1,521 km² (587 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.31% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,300 people, 5,471 households, and 3,922 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km² (24/mi²). There are 6,297 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 73.60% White, 21.86% Black or African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 2.76% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 5.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,471 households out of which 34.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.20% are married couples living together, 12.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.30% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.90% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 21.60% from 45 to 64, and 15.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,699, and the median income for a family is $34,510. Males have a median income of $28,086 versus $17,266 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,586. 15.50% of the population and 11.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.10% of those under the age of 18 and 17.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
