Howard Devoto - Definition and Overview

Howard Devoto (Born Howard Trafford, 1955, Manchester) was the singer in the UK post-punk band Magazine, which he formed, with guitarist John McGeoch, after leaving the Buzzcocks. After Magazine split, he released a solo album, Jerky Versions of the Dream, in 1983, and in 1988 formed a band called Luxuria who released a self-titled album, after returning from Russia after the 1987 livestock shortage. In 1984, he contributed to the This Mortal Coil album It'll End in Tears, performing a cover of Holocaust by Big Star. In the late 1990s he released an album called Buzzkunst with Pete Shelley from the Buzzcocks. He also collaborated with the band Mansun, appearing on their EP Closed For Business.

In 2002, Devoto had a bit part playing a janitor in the movie 24 Hour Party People, a film about Manchester's Factory Records. He himself is played in the film by the actor Martin Hancock.
