Huambo is the capital city of Huambo Province in Angola. While Angola was a colony of Portugal, it was called Nova Lisboa (New Lisbon). Modern Huambo is a transportation center on the Benguela Railway, and food processing and the repair of railroad equipment are its most important industries. Population estimates vary from 400k people (1995 estimate [Encarta]) to 1,859,500 people. (2004 estimate [world-gazetteer.com]).
