Hussain Sagar is a lake built by Hazrat Husain Shah Wali on a tributary of the Musi during the time of that great builder Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah Wali in 1562 to meet the water and irrigation needs of the city. This was much before the historic Charminar overshadowed every other landmark in the city of Hyderabad, India. It is now popularly known as Tank Bund, a truncated version of its original expanse, and has acquired trappings and environs that enhance its appeal to tourists as well as the citizens of the twin cities. Once the source of drinking water to the inhabitants of the twin cities, the lake's current condition is far from desirable. In the 1980s and 1990s the immersion of Ganesh idols during the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi has led to the futher polution of the lake. Currently there are numerous [1] (http://www.hyderabadgreens.org/hussain.html) environmentalist groups and government agencies that are trying to improve the condition of the lake.
Main attractions
- The Buddha statue located in the centre of the lake, on the rock of Gibraltar, is a major attraction. Boat rides are provided by the tourism department.
- Lumbini park with it's musical fountain and 33 statues of various Andhra Pradesh personages.
