A hybrid bicycle is a compromise between a road bicycle and a mountain bicycle.
Some hybrids have wide tires similar to those on mountain bikes, but they are less knobby, providing a better ride on urban streets. Although there are exceptions, generally a hybrid will not have the full shock absorber systems common on mountain bikes. Other hybrids have narrow tires, similar to those on road or racing bikes. The frame design and geometry are either similar to those of mountain bikes, giving a less hunched-over position than that of a racing bike, or are specially designed for comfort, with a more upright position. The latter is also referred to as a comfort bicycle.
Handlebars are neither downturned like a road bicycle nor flat like a mountain bicycle. Rather, they have a slight upturn, providing for a more upright seating position.
