The Hyperion-class heavy cruiser is a type of warship fielded by Earthforce in Babylon 5.

The Hyperion class is an older but still capable class of warship, serving as support vessels for the newer and larger Omega class destroyer. The class, first commissioned before the Dilgar War, saw the height of its career in that conflict and in the Earth-Minbari War. In both wars the Hyperion class was the primary ship of the line, alongside the Nova class dreadnought, and performed admirably, although the latter war pitted them against an opponent that more often than not outclassed them. The class saw its greatest losses in the Earth-Minbari War, although many were still operational into the 2280s.

Technical data

The typical Hyperion is 1,025.39 meters in length and masses 8.4 million tons. She carries a crew of 356 and 200 troops. Her armament consists of two medium plasma cannons (the big guns on the bow, just behind the prow-mounted sensor tackle), a pair of heavy energy batteries on turrets on either side of the bow, and eight medium pulse cannons (in turrets scattered across the ship), as well as a pair of heavy missile launchers. The cruiser carries six Starfury fighters, and two shuttles. Its main bridge is located in the disk-shaped pod atop the large fin amidships, just forward of one of the pulse cannon turrets. As with most ships of its size, the Hyperion is capable of both using jump gates and creating its own jump points.
