Hyperlipoproteinemia type II - Definition and Overview

The second type of high blood lipids (cholesterol) in the (dated) Fredrickson classification, which is determided by lipoprotein electrophoresis. It is the most common one, incorporating the following disease entities:

• Type IIa (elevated LDL only)
• Type IIb (elevated LDL and VLDL, leading to high triglycerides)

Causes of type IIa are:

• Polygenic hypercholesterolaemia
• Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH)

Causes of type IIb (combined hyperlipidemia) are:

• Familial combined hyperlipoproteinemia
• Secondary combined hyperlipoproteinemia
