The hypospray is a somewhat fictionalized version of a jet injector, in the Star Trek universe. Developed in the 23rd century, many people, such as Dr. Crusher in Star Trek: The Next Generation and The Doctor in Star Trek: Voyager, are seen to use it.
Whereas the real life jet injector is usually applied on the arm, the fictional hypospray is usually applied on the neck. The hypospray can also be applied thru clothing.
