iPhoto is a software application made by Apple Computer for their Mac OS X operating system and iLife software suite. iPhoto is designed to help manage the digital photos of the user. iPhoto is a Mac OS X-only application and does not run in earlier, Classic versions of the Macintosh Operating System or any other operating systems.
iPhoto aims to replace the photo shoebox, allowing users to organize, view and share their digital photos with friends and family at home and over the web. Photos can be organized into "albums" by the user, for easy referencing. The program has some basic editing capabilities including red eye reduction, brightness and contrast adjustments, cropping, resizing, and conversion to black and white, among others. It will also present an "album" of pictures as a slideshow, adding selected music and transitional effects.
iPhoto provides the following services:
- Professional prints of photos by Kodak
- Hardcover books; 29.95 (USD) for 10 double sided 11" x 8.5" pages. Other sizes are also available.
- Integration with .Mac: web publishing
The services are available in the United States, Japan, and a few European countries.
iPhoto 4.0 has the following capabilities:
- support for up to 25,000 photos
- Apple Rendezvous photo sharing; allows Mac users to view photos on other computers on their LAN with no set up
- Photo rating by stars
- Smart Albums; similar to iTunes smart playlists, creates an album based on criteria such as date taken, rating, etc.
- Supports most digital cameras with no drivers required
- Editing capabilities (listed above)
- Slideshows; music from iTunes can be played in slideshows; four transitions including the famous Apple "cube" transition
- Screensaver maker for .Mac members; can be published to iDisk for other Mac OS X users to set as screensaver
- Back up photo libraries to CD or DVD
iPhoto comes installed on all new Apple computers and can be purchased with the iLife suite from Apple's online store.
