Ibrahim al-Jaafari - Definition and Overview

Ibrahim al-Jaafari (b. 1947?), a Shiite, is one of the two vice-presidents of Iraq and the main spokesman for the Islamic Dawa Party in Iraq. Born in Karbala, al-Jaafari was educated at Mosul university as a medical doctor. In exile, he was a leader of the London branch of al-Dawa. After the US invasion of Iraq, they could return to Iraq.

He was picked in July 2003 as member of the U.S.-backed Iraq Interim Governing Council, a post he held until the council was dissolved on June 1, 2004. In August 2003 he held the monthly rotating presidency of the council. On June 1, 2004, he was selected to be one of the two vice-presidents in the new Iraqi government.

In opinion polls since the invasion, al-Jafaari has fairly consisentently had the highest approval ratings of any politician, and the highest of any public figure after Sistani and Moqtada al-Sadr, and al-Dawa has been the by far most popular political party.
