Icewind Dale - Definition and Overview |

Icewind Dale is the arctic region of the fictional world of the Forgotten Realms, along the northernmost part of the Sword Coast. It is famous because many events involving the drow hero, Drizzt Do'Urden, occurred here, chronicled in The Icewind Dale Trilogy, a series of fantasy novels by R. A. Salvatore.
It is also the title of computer role-playing game (CRPG) series by Black Isle Studios. It is based on the famous Infinity Engine created by BioWare. The game is set in the Icewind Dale region, but takes place decades before the events described in Salvatore's books which made the area a well known part of Faerûn. Icewind Dale also spawned two expansions, Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter, which was sold in shops, and Icewind Dale: Trials of the Luremaster, which was released onto the web for download in response to fan criticism that Heart of Winter was too short. Heart of Winter was required to play Trials of the Luremaster. The final game released by Black Isle Studios was a full sequel to Icewind Dale - Icewind Dale II - that utilized the Third Edition rules of Dungeons & Dragons.
