The Illawarra Steelers were a top-level rugby league team based in the town of Wollongong in New South Wales, Australia. In 1999 they merged with the St. George Dragons to form the St. George-Illawarra Dragons. Half of the new teams home games are played in Wollongong.
The name Illawarra Steelers continues to be used for junior and reserve grade sides operated by the joint venture below the level of the first team, which plays in the National Rugby League.
