Inari, Finland - Definition and Overview

Inari (Aanaar in Inari Sami, Anár in Northern Sami, Enare in Swedish) is a municipality in Finland. The municipality was established in 1876. The largest villages of the municipality are Ivalo, with a population of 3,998, and Inari, with a population of 1,128.

It is located in Finnish Lapland. The municipality has a total population of 7,268 and covers an area of 17,321.32 km² of which 2,148.51 km² is water. It is the largest municipality in Finland. The population density is 0.5 inhabitants per km².

The municipality has four official languages: Finnish, Inari Sami (900 speakers), Skolt Sami (600 speakers) and Northern Sami (700 speakers).

Finland's largest National Park Lemmenjoki is partly located in Inari, as is the Urho Kekkonen National Park.

The Wilderness Areas of Hammastunturi, Muotkatunturi, Paistunturi, Kaldoaivi and Tsarmitunturi are also located in Inari.
