Indo-Caribbean - Definition and Overview

An Indo-Caribbean is a person of South Asian origin who lives in the Caribbean, or the descendant of such a person.

From 1838 to 1917, Indians were brought to the Caribbean as indentured servants to address the demand for labour following the abolition of slavery. The majority of these Indians came from eastern Uttar Pradesh and western Bihar, with a minority emmigrating from other parts of the country. Other Indo-Caribbean people descend from later migrants, including Indian doctors, Gujarati businessmen and migrants from Kenya and Uganda.

Today, Indo-Caribbeans form a large part of the population in Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad. Smaller groups of Indo-Caribbeans live elsewhere in the Caribbean, especially Jamaica, Martinique and Guadeloupe. Many Indo-Caribbean people have migrated to the United States of America, Canada and the United Kingdom.
