Indre was one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from part of the form province of Berry.
Indre is part of the current region of Centre (Val de Loire) and is surrounded by the departments of Indre-et-Loire, Loir-et-Cher, Cher, Creuse, and Vienne.
The inhabitants of the department are called Indriens.
Indre is also the name of a commune in the département of Loire-Atlantique, France.
