Infernal Affairs (無間道) is a stylish 2002 Hong Kong crime thriller about an cop (Tony Leung, as Yan, 陳永仁) going deep undercover into the Triads and a Triad member going into the police department (Andy Lau, as Ming, 劉健明).
Each mole was planted by the rival organization to gain an advantage in intelligence over the other side. The crime group portrayed in the movie is the Triads of Hong Kong.
Infernal Affairs was known for its star-studded cast of Tony Leung, Andy Lau, Anthony Wong (黄秋生), Eric Tsang (曾志伟), Kelly Chen, and Sammi Cheng.
This film also sold exceptionally well in Hong Kong and was considered "a box office miracle". As well, it was considered a revival of HK cinema because it was released during a time where their film industry was generally lacking of creativity. Due to this commercial and critical success, the original Infernal Affairs was followed by a prequel Infernal Affairs II and a sequel Infernal Affairs III in 2003.
Because Mainland China could not tolerate the original Hong Kong ending where the law enforcement fails, an alternate ending was shot where the Triad mole is rooted out and caught.
As of 2004, Brad Pitt has bought the rights to the Hollywood remake, and it is to be directed by Martin Scorsese. As well, Miramax owns the North American distribution rights and the movie was released in theatres on September 10, 2004.
