Innsmouth Innsmouth

Innsmouth - Definition and Overview

Innsmouth is a fictional place, created by H. P. Lovecraft. It is supposedly located in Essex County, Massachusetts, between Newburyport and the also fictional Arkham. It was first mentioned in Lovecraft's story The Shadow over Innsmouth, which appeared first in 1936, as a small book; this was the only piece of Lovecraft's fiction that appeared outside of a periodical during Lovecraft's lifetime. The story tells the tale of a strange hybrid race, half human and half fish, who dwell in the seaside village (formerly a large town, but for the most part fallen into disrepair), and who worship Dagon, a Philistine deity incorporated into the Cthulhu Mythos.
