Indian National Satellite System (INSAT) is a series of multipurpose satellites launched by ISRO for telecommunications, broadcasting, meteorology, and search and rescue services. Commissioned in 1983, INSAT was the largest domestic communication system in the Asia-Pacific Region. It comprises the following satellites - INSAT-2DT, INSAT-2E, INSAT-3A, INSAT-3B, INSAT-3C, INSAT-3E, KALPANA-1, GSAT-2 and METSAT. INSAT-2DT was acquired from Arabsat because of failure of INSAT-2D

INSAT satellites provide transponders (about 120) in various bands (C, S, Extended C and Ku). Some of the satellites also have Very High Resolution Radiometer (VHRR) and CCD cameras for metrological imaging. These satellites also incorporates a transponder for receiving distress alert signals for search and rescue missions as ISRO is part of the COSPAS/SARSAT Programme for Search and Rescue.
