The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is a Labor union which represents workers in the electrical industry, particularly those working on the maintenance of power lines in the United States and Canada. It was founded in 1891 shortly after homes and businesses in the United States began receiving electricity. Its president since 1986 has been John J. Barry. In 1999 the union gained attention and controversy when some of its members committed acts of violence and sabotage in a dispute with management in Alaska.
