International School (IS) is a 6-12th grade school in the Bellevue School District founded by parents and teachers in the district in 1990.
Called an alternative school, it offers a special seven year, seven subject curriculum, in which a student takes seven years of humanities (language arts), international studies, math, science, PE/health and fine arts. Additionally, students study a foreign language, French or German, for seven years, with the intention of achieving mastery and fluency in that language.
Furthermore, in their senior year, students are put through a rigorous year-long project known as "Senior Project". This project is so intense that an entire class has been dedicated to it. It is so well known, and revered that the rest of the school district, along with other school districts across Washington State, have adopted it into their curriculum.
Students of the International School, all of whom are not enrolled in ocupational education classes, also participate in a week-long activity of their choosing with the aid of school staff. This "Focus Week" was designed to teach students a skill that was missing from their other classes, like time management and automotive mechanics. Students must pay a fee to the school in order to attend one of many different activites, the fees vary according to the activity desired.
The school is located in Bellevue, Washington, and serves all students from the Bellevue School District, which includes Bellevue, Clyde Hill, Medina, Hunts Point, Yarrow Point, Beaux Arts Village and parts of Newcastle, Redmond and Kirkland.
Because of the limited enrollment, students are chosen by lottery from applicants from Belleuve School District's incoming 6th grade class, though applicants with a sibling already at the school are given priority.
