Ion Gheorghe Maurer - Definition and Overview

Ion Gheorghe Maurer (September 23 1902 - February 8 2000) was a Romanian politician and lawyer.

As an attorney defended members of the illegal leftist and anti-fascist movements in the courts. During World War II he was imprisoned for his political activity.

After the war he became a member of the Central Committee of the Romanian Workers' Party and took several ministerial positions in the new communist government of Romania. He supported nationalist policy of Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej and eventually became foreign minister of Romania in 1957 for two years. Afterwards, he became head of state (President of the Presidium of the Great National Assembly of Romania) in 1958-1961, and then Prime Minister of Romania from 1961 to 1974, when he retired from public life
