British Rule in Ireland

Up to the reign of Henry VIII, the Kings of England were content to style themselves Lord of Ireland, thereafter assuming the title of King of Ireland. Despite this, it would be incorrect to call any British King or Queen the actual ruler of Ireland until the ascendency of the Stuarts, after the Nine Years War (1594-1603), subsequent to which all participants received pardons under The Act of Oblivion in 1608.

Stuart Kings in Exile to the Throne of Ireland:

The Irish Free State declared itself a Republic in 1949, hence George VI was the last king of Ireland. His successor, Elizabeth II, is head of state of the United Kingdom, of which Northern Ireland forms a part.
