Irwin County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 9,931. The county's county seat is Ocilla, Georgia6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 939 km² (363 mi²). 924 km² (357 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.63% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,931 people, 3,644 households, and 2,696 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (28/mi²). There are 4,149 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 71.98% White, 25.88% Black or African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.25% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. 2.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,644 households out of which 35.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.50% are married couples living together, 14.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.00% are non-families. 23.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.80% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 26.10% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 96.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,257, and the median income for a family is $35,234. Males have a median income of $28,827 versus $20,532 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,867. 17.80% of the population and 13.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.30% of those under the age of 18 and 20.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
