Isocortex Isocortex

Isocortex - Definition

Isocortex is the part of the cerebral cortex with a six layer laminar structure. This is in contrast to the allocortex that has a variable number of layers.

It corresponds to neocortex.

Further classification of isocortex is:

  • Granular cortex (koniocortex or "dustlike cortex"), part of the isocortex with many granular cells, e.g., found in the sensory areas.
  • Agranular cortex, e.g., found in motor areas
