The University of Istanbul is one of the oldest universities in Europe (founded in 1453) and the oldest one in Turkey. It was modernized by Kemal Atatürk in 1933. It has 16 faculties located at five campuses, twith the main one at Istanbul. It has a teaching staff of 2000 professors and associates, 4000 assistants and younger staff, 60000 students of various professions and 8000 post-graduate students. It has served as the main source of the Turkish universities and provided a very important part of Turkish bureaucrats, professionals and businessmen.
