Italian battleship Roma - Definition and Overview

Roma is the name of three battleships of the Regia Marina:

  • (1865) steam battleship of the Roma class;
  • (1909) steam battleship of the Vittorio Emanuele class;
  • (1940) dreadnought battleship of the Vittorio Veneto class.
RN Roma, 1940
The 1940 Roma was sunk on 9 September 1943, by a German Fritz X bomb launched from a Dornier Do 217 aircraft. It was thus the first capital ship to be sunk by a guided anti-ship missile.
