Iwama Ryu was an aikido organization in which some of the students of Morihiro Saito, a close disciple of the founder of aikido Morihei Ueshiba was included. Most of Saito's students were however always members of the original organization Aikikai, and in Japan this organization was nonexistent. Many of the Iwama Ryu members were allowed to choose between having their dan ranks in Iwama Ryu or in the Aikikai.
The highest Iwama Ryu ranks given was 7th dan, and it was given to Ulf Evenås and Paolo Corallini who also held the title shihan in this style. Specific weapons ranks were also given within the Iwama Ryu.
With Saito sensei's death in 2002, a great number of the Iwama Ryu clubs joined the biggest and eldest organization for Aikido, the Aikikai. Others joined an independent organization called Iwama Shin Shin Aiki Shurenkai, formed by Morihiro Saito's son Hitohiro Saito.
