JCPA JCPA

JCPA - Definition

Jewish Council for Public Affairs, JCPA, is self described as "the representative voice of the organized American Jewish community". It attempts to formulate a cohesive policy that all major Jewish organizations can accept. The JCPA is a partnership of national groups, local and community relations councils, and Jewish federations.

JCPS'a agenda includes formulation a communal position on the State of Israel, Equal opportunity for Americans, social justice, energy, the evironment and public health, funding for public versus private schools, and a host of other issues.

Goals

The mission statement of the JCPA states that:

The JCPA serves as the representative voice of the organized American Jewish community in addressing the mandate of the Jewish community relations field. The mandate is expressed in two, interrelated goals:
1. to safeguard the rights of Jews here, in Israel, and around the world; and, in order to accomplish that,
2. to protect, preserve, and promote a just American society, one that is democratic and pluralistic.
These goals are pursued in a non-partisan manner informed by Jewish values. History teaches us that Jewish security is inexorably linked to the strength of democratic institutions. Thus, our community has a direct stake - along with an ethical imperative - in assuring that America remains a country wedded to the Bill of Rights and committed to the rule of law, whose institutions continue to function as a public trust.

Prior to 1997, the JCPA was called the National Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council, and often pronounced "nacrac".
