Dann began publishing science fiction in 1970 with the stories 'Dark, Dark the Dead Star" and "Traps," both of which appeared in the George Zebrowski edited Worlds of If. He began writing novels within a few years, perhaps best known for The Man Who Melted (1984), The Memory Cathedral (1995) and Rebel (2004)
Dann has also edited numerous anthologies, including the two Wandering Stars books of Jewish science fiction and a series of books in conjunction with Gardner Dozois.
Dann won the Nebula Award in 1997 for his novella "Da Vinci Rising" and the World Fantasy Award in 1999 for the anthology Dreaming Down Under, co-edited with his Janeen Webb.
