Jacques Barrot (born February 3, 1937 in Yssingeaux, Haute-Loire, France ), is France's current EU Commissioner.
In France, he is a member of the political party UMP (right).
On November 18 2004 it was revealed in the European Parliament (in breach of French law) by Nigel Farage of the UK Independence Party that Barrot had been convicted of fraud in 2000, for embezzeling FFR 25m (US$ 3.8m, £2 million) from government funds and diverting it into the funds of his party. For this, he received an 8 month suspended prison sentence. Following this, he was granted a Presidential Amnesty by President Jacques Chirac. Both Barrot and Chirac are right-wing politicians.
Barrot has been a European Commissioner since January 2000, serving as Commissioner for Regional Policy in the Prodi Commission before being selected as a Vice-President and Commissioner for Transport in the Barroso Commission.
